Welcome back to the Lifestyle Business Quest Podcast! I’m thrilled to have you here as we dive into the strategies that fuel true growth for lifestyle coaches just like you. Today, we’re talking about one of the biggest challenges coaches face: generating a consistent flow of quality leads.

You’re probably tired of hearing the same old advice—“Post more on social media,” or “Run ads”—but today, I’m breaking down a simplified yet powerful framework I call the 3 B’s of lead generation: Build It, Borrow It, and Buy It. This strategy has helped countless coaches go from sporadic clients to having a steady pipeline of ideal prospects eager to work with them.

Along the way, I’ll share real client stories that show exactly how these methods work in practice, giving you tangible examples of how you can apply these techniques in your own business.

By the end of this episode, you’ll have a clear roadmap for how to apply these strategies and start seeing results right away.

Let’s dive in!

The first strategy is all about building your own audience from scratch. Now, I know that sounds like a huge task, but stay with me because it’s actually simpler than you think when you focus on the right actions.

1. The Power of Consistency:

Building your audience is a long game, but it pays off massively when done right. Start by showing up consistently on one or two platforms where your ideal clients hang out. This might be Instagram, LinkedIn, or even YouTube. The key is delivering value through content that educates, inspires, and engages.

Here’s an example: One of my clients, Coach Margie, was struggling to get consistent leads. She was spreading herself too thin across multiple platforms and wasn’t seeing results. We focused her efforts on LinkedIn, where her ideal clients hang out, and helped her build a consistent content plan that spoke directly to their pain points. Within a few months, she grew her audience, and her content began attracting highly qualified leads—people who were ready to book calls.

2. Leverage Your Story and Expertise:

One of the most powerful tools in building an audience is your personal story. People connect with authenticity and transparency, so don’t be afraid to share your journey, struggles, and wins. When potential clients see that you’ve walked the same path they’re on, it builds trust and makes them more likely to engage with you.

Coach David, another client, was hesitant to share his backstory. He felt it might come across as too personal or off-topic. We reframed his story to highlight how overcoming his own challenges made him a stronger coach. Once he started sharing this consistently, his engagement skyrocketed, and he started attracting clients who resonated with his journey and wanted his guidance.

3. Use Lead Magnets:

This is where you start turning followers into leads. Create a high-value freebie that solves a specific problem your audience has—like a cheat sheet, a guide, or a mini-course—and offer it in exchange for their email. Once they’re on your list, you can nurture them through automated email sequences and eventually invite them to a discovery call or webinar.

One client, Coach Michelle, created a free guide on “10 Simple Habits to Boost Your Wellness,” which spoke directly to her niche. She promoted it consistently across social media, and within weeks, her email list started growing rapidly. Those leads converted into paying clients as they moved through her nurturing sequence.

Building your audience takes time, but it’s the foundation of a sustainable business. Now, let’s move on to the second strategy…

Sometimes, you don’t have to build your audience from scratch—you can borrow it from others who have already done the heavy lifting. This strategy is all about collaborations, partnerships, and leveraging other people’s networks.

1. Strategic Collaborations:

Look for influencers, coaches, or even businesses that share a similar audience but aren’t direct competitors. For example, if you’re a business coach, partnering with a mindset coach or a financial expert could be a win-win. You can co-host webinars, exchange guest blog posts, or even do a live interview on social media.

One of my clients, Coach Peter, partnered with a fitness coach who had a large following. They hosted a joint webinar on “Building Both Mental and Physical Strength for Entrepreneurs.” Peter was able to tap into the fitness coach’s audience and offer his own lead magnet at the end of the webinar. This collaboration generated dozens of qualified leads who were already interested in what he offered.

2. Guest Speaking and Podcasting:

Another powerful way to borrow an audience is by appearing as a guest on podcasts, summits, and even live events. You might think, “I’m not big enough to be a guest yet,” but that’s just a limiting belief. There are countless niche podcasts, virtual summits, and online communities that are hungry for expert voices.

Coach Nina leveraged this strategy by appearing on small but relevant podcasts in her niche. Even though the audiences weren’t massive, the quality was high. Every time she was featured, she gained new leads who were genuinely interested in her coaching. The key was showing up with value and being intentional about which podcasts she chose.

3. Leveraging Communities and Groups:

If you’re active in online groups or communities, whether that’s Facebook groups, LinkedIn, or even forums, you’re sitting on a goldmine of potential leads. But there’s a right way and a wrong way to do this.

Coach Christine, one of my clients, was a member of several wellness and coaching groups but wasn’t seeing much engagement. We worked on a strategy where she consistently shared value, offered insights, and engaged with others’ posts. Instead of promoting her services directly, she focused on being genuinely helpful. After a few weeks, people in the group started reaching out to her directly, asking how they could work with her. That’s the power of serving first and letting the leads come to you.

The third strategy is the one most people jump to first—buying leads through paid advertising. But here’s the thing: if you haven’t built a foundation first, you’ll end up wasting money. Let’s talk about how to buy leads smartly.

1. The Importance of Testing:

When you start running ads—whether it’s on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Google—the first step is testing. Don’t throw thousands of dollars at ads hoping they’ll work. Start small, run different versions of your creatives, and test various headlines and offers. The goal is to figure out what resonates with your audience before scaling up.

Coach Stuart initially struggled with Facebook ads. He was burning through his budget without seeing results. We tweaked his ad copy and narrowed down his targeting to focus on a more specific audience. By testing different messages and creatives, we found the combination that clicked. Once he dialed in on what worked, he scaled up his ads and started consistently generating qualified leads.

2. Targeting the Right Audience:

One of the biggest mistakes I see coaches make is targeting too broad of an audience. With paid ads, you can be laser-focused. You want to narrow down your targeting to people who are not just interested in coaching but are actively looking for solutions. Facebook and Instagram’s advanced targeting features allow you to drill down based on demographics, behaviors, and even life events.

Coach Ross, another client, was initially targeting everyone who showed an interest in personal development. After refining his audience to focus specifically on mid-career professionals who were interested in leadership coaching, his ad performance improved significantly. By being laser-focused, his cost per lead dropped, and he was able to fill his calendar with high-quality prospects.

3. Creating a Compelling Offer:

Once you have the right audience, the key is giving them a reason to click. This goes back to your lead magnet—whether it’s a free guide, a masterclass, or a challenge, make sure your offer speaks directly to their pain points and promises a tangible result.

Coach Paul developed a free mini-course on overcoming burnout, which resonated deeply with his audience. His ads were simple and direct: “Struggling with burnout? This free course will show you how to regain your energy and passion.” The response was overwhelming. The leads that came in through those ads were not just interested—they were ready to take action and enroll in his premium program.

Paid ads are powerful, but they’re most effective when combined with the “build it” and “borrow it” strategies. When all three work together, you’ll have a lead-generation machine that consistently fills your pipeline with qualified prospects.

So, there you have it—the 3 B’s of lead generation: Build It, Borrow It, and Buy It.

Build It: Start by consistently showing up where your ideal clients are, sharing valuable content that aligns with their needs, and using lead magnets to convert followers into leads. Like Coach Margie and Coach Michelle, building your audience over time will create a strong foundation for your business.

Borrow It: Don’t reinvent the wheel. Collaborate with others who have already built an audience similar to yours. Whether it’s partnering for webinars, appearing on podcasts, or being active in relevant groups, borrowing an audience can fast-track your lead generation efforts, just like Coach Peter and Coach Christine did.

Buy It: When you’re ready to scale, paid ads can be a game-changer—but only if you’re strategic about it. Test your messages, target the right audience, and ensure your offer is compelling. Coaches like Stuart and Ross refined their ads and started filling their calendars with quality leads once they had their foundations in place.

The beauty of this approach is that you don’t have to rely on just one strategy. When you combine all three methods—building, borrowing, and buying—you create a powerful, sustainable system that consistently brings in high-quality leads. This is how you move from sporadic client inquiries to a steady pipeline of prospects eager to work with you.
