Let me hit you with a truth: most people are operating far below their potential—not because they lack the ability but because they’re afraid to push beyond their comfort zone. And if you’re here, listening to this, I know you’re not satisfied with average. You want to build a $250K+ lifestyle business that gives you freedom, impact, and a life you love.
But here’s the thing: To get there, you’ve got to be willing to dig deep, face discomfort head-on, and tap into a mindset that most entrepreneurs never touch. Today, we’re going *even deeper* into the principles of David Goggins—the man who doesn’t just flirt with pain, but *embraces* it. His philosophies go beyond motivation or inspiration. They’re about rewiring how you think, how you approach challenges, and how you unlock a savage version of yourself that can push through any limit.
I’m also going to share stories from my clients—Rick, Bill, and Cyrus—who took these concepts and applied them to build unstoppable lifestyle businesses. And we’ll go through three practical steps you can take right now to bring these philosophies into your own business, pushing you beyond limits you didn’t even know existed.
This episode isn’t about surface-level advice. It’s about going deep. If you’re ready for that, let’s dive in.
Hey, it’s Travis Greenlee, and welcome to *The Lifestyle Business Quest! Today, we’re not just scratching the surface—we’re getting real, raw, and uncomfortable. If you’ve been feeling stuck in your business, or like you’re just spinning your wheels without seeing real growth, I’m going to challenge you to dig deeper into how you think and operate.
David Goggins is a master of this. He takes what most people shy away from—pain, discomfort, fear—and flips it into the fuel that drives him to push harder and achieve more. But this isn’t just about Goggins. These philosophies have helped countless entrepreneurs, including some of my own clients like Rick, Bill, and Cyrus, who embraced the struggle, pushed beyond what they thought was possible, and came out with thriving lifestyle businesses on the other side.
We’re going deep today, so buckle up, and let’s get into it.
One of the most powerful and transformative concepts from Goggins is the *Accountability Mirror*. This is the moment where you stand face-to-face with yourself and confront the hard, brutal truth about why you’re not where you want to be. It’s about stripping away the lies, the excuses, and the justifications that have been keeping you stuck.
Rick’s story is a perfect example. He had been working a corporate job for years, and like many people, he *wanted* to start a business. He had the vision of freedom—traveling the world, spending time with his family, making an impact—but he was stuck. Stuck in a routine of comfort. He told himself he didn’t have time, that he needed to wait for the right moment.
But here’s the truth—there’s never a perfect moment. Rick’s turning point came when he stood in front of his accountability mirror and asked himself the hard questions: “What am I really afraid of? What am I *avoiding*?” And when the answers stared back at him, he realized it wasn’t time or resources holding him back. It was *fear*. Fear of stepping out of comfort. Fear of failure.
So he did what Goggins teaches—he confronted it head-on. He wrote down his fears and committed to daily non-negotiables: waking up an hour earlier, making uncomfortable sales calls, and putting his business first, even when his mind screamed to fall back into comfort. Rick stuck those non-negotiables to his mirror and faced them every single day.
Fast forward a year later, Rick had left his corporate job and scaled his business to seven figures, traveling the world with his family. His accountability mirror moment forced him to face the truth—and that truth set him free.
So here’s my question for you: When was the last time you looked in your own accountability mirror? What excuses are you making? What are you avoiding? Write it down, own it, and commit to facing it daily. That’s where the change begins.
Now let’s go even deeper into one of Goggins’ most famous philosophies—the *40% Rule*. This principle states that when you think you’ve reached your limit, when you feel like you can’t push any further, you’re really only at 40% of your true capacity. The other 60% is still there, untapped, waiting for you to push harder.
Bill, another client of mine, hit a point in his coaching business where everything seemed to be falling apart. The market had shifted, his client pipeline was drying up, and revenue was tanking. He came to me feeling like he had given everything he had, like he couldn’t push any further.
But that’s the thing—*he hadn’t*. Bill was stuck at 40%, thinking that was all he had to give. So I challenged him to tap into that hidden 60%. I reminded him that the moment you feel like you’ve given your all is exactly when you need to push harder. So, Bill did. He extended his working hours, overhauled his marketing strategy, and put in the uncomfortable work of re-engaging with cold leads and exploring new markets.
In just a few months, Bill had turned his business around, reaching revenue levels even higher than before the market shift. That 60% he thought didn’t exist? It was there, waiting for him to unlock it.
The truth is, we all stop too soon. We hit discomfort and back off, thinking we’ve hit our limit. But the real magic happens when you push *through* that discomfort. Where in your business have you been stopping at 40%? Is it in your outreach? Your marketing efforts? Your sales pipeline? You’ve got more to give—so push further, because the growth lies beyond that discomfort.
One of Goggins’ most profound philosophies is the idea of *callousing the mind*. This isn’t just about getting mentally tough in a moment of hardship—it’s about consistently training your brain to endure discomfort, rejection, and failure, over and over again, until you become resilient. Just like your hands develop callouses from hard work, your mind does the same through repeated exposure to challenges.
Cyrus, another client of mine, was paralyzed by fear when he first started his business. He was terrified of rejection—scared that his offers would fall flat, scared that potential clients would say no. So, what did he do? He avoided the discomfort. He hesitated, he second-guessed, and he held back.
I told Cyrus the same thing Goggins tells people—discomfort is where you need to *live*. I challenged him to embrace the very thing he feared: rejection. Every “no” he heard was a callous forming in his mind, making him tougher, more resilient, and less fearful of future challenges.
At first, every rejection stung. But over time, Cyrus started to realize that those rejections weren’t failures—they were training sessions. He was callousing his mind, making it stronger, tougher, more capable of handling adversity. Soon, rejection stopped scaring him. Instead, it fueled him.
Today, Cyrus runs a highly successful coaching business, and his mental resilience is one of his biggest assets. The more you expose yourself to discomfort, the more it loses its power over you.
So ask yourself: What discomfort are you avoiding in your business? Is it facing rejection, tackling new markets, or putting yourself out there? Lean into it. Callous your mind. That’s where true mental strength is built.
Now that we’ve dug into the core of these philosophies, let’s get into some real, actionable steps. Here’s how you can take what we’ve learned and apply it to your business *right now*:
1. Use the Accountability Mirror – Get Brutally Honest with Yourself
This isn’t just about pep talks—it’s about confronting the uncomfortable truths. Take some time today to stand in front of your accountability mirror, whether it’s literal or figurative. Write down the excuses, fears, and distractions holding you back. Then, create three daily non-negotiables and tape them somewhere you’ll see them every day. Face them, own them, and take action.
2. Implement the 40% Rule – Do One Thing That Pushes You Past Discomfort
Identify one area in your business where you’ve been playing small—where you’ve convinced yourself you’ve done enough. It could be your sales efforts, marketing, or client outreach. Now, push harder. Extend your working hours, make more calls, send that extra email. When you think you’ve reached your limit, know that you’ve only hit 40%. The rest is still there.
3. Callous Your Mind – Embrace Daily Discomfort
Every day, do something that makes you uncomfortable. Whether it’s reaching out to a potential client, tackling a hard conversation, or investing in something that scares you—lean into it. The more you expose yourself to discomfort, the more resilient you’ll become. Just like with Cyrus, every rejection, every challenge, is a mental callous forming, making you stronger for what’s next.
