We’re going to dive deep into what flow really is, how it affects your brain, and why it’s so important for coaches and entrepreneurs. We’re going to break down the neuroscience behind flow, talk about how it impacts your performance, and I’ll give you three specific, actionable steps you can use to get into flow more often. You’ll also hear personal stories from me and my clients that show how accessing flow has led to some major breakthroughs.

Let’s dive into the heart of today’s topic: Getting into your flow state.

Let’s start by defining flow state. It’s that magical moment when you’re so deeply immersed in an activity that everything else fades away—your focus is razor-sharp, you’re performing at your best, and work feels almost effortless. Psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi coined the term in the 1970s after studying what makes people truly happy and fulfilled. He discovered that flow is a key ingredient for those peak experiences where we feel completely in the zone.

But flow isn’t just a psychological phenomenon—it’s a neurochemical process that happens in the brain. When you’re in flow, your brain releases a powerful mix of chemicals that boost focus, motivation, and creativity. These include dopamine, norepinephrine, endorphins, serotonin, and anandamide. Together, they create a feeling of deep engagement, allowing you to perform at your highest level.

So, why is this important for coaches and entrepreneurs? In flow, you’re able to work more efficiently, think more creatively, and solve problems faster. And, unlike grinding through tasks in a state of stress, flow makes work feel energizing rather than draining.

The Science Behind Flow: Let’s break down what’s happening in your brain when you’re in flow:

1. Neurochemical Release: Flow triggers the release of five powerful neurochemicals that supercharge your brain. Dopamine gives you a burst of focus and motivation. Norepinephrine heightens your attention to detail. Endorphins make you feel good and reduce any pain or discomfort you might be experiencing. Serotonin stabilizes your mood, making you feel calm and satisfied. And anandamide promotes creative thinking by helping you connect ideas in new ways.

2. Transient Hypofrontality: During flow, your prefrontal cortex—the part of your brain responsible for self-doubt, worry, and overthinking—actually quiets down. This phenomenon is called transient hypofrontality, and it’s one of the reasons why you feel so focused and confident when you’re in flow. Without the inner voice of doubt, you’re free to act without second-guessing yourself.

3. Brainwave Shifts: Flow shifts your brainwaves into the alpha-theta range, which is associated with deep relaxation and heightened focus. Alpha waves help you concentrate, while theta waves are linked to creativity and intuition. This perfect balance allows you to access your most creative ideas and stay engaged for longer periods of time.

Why Flow is Crucial for Coaches and Entrepreneurs: As a coach or entrepreneur, you’re juggling a lot of responsibilities—client work, marketing, content creation, business strategy, and more. Entering flow helps you manage all of this with more ease, focus, and creativity.

Here’s why flow is so critical for your business:

1. Unlocks Creativity: Creativity is essential in coaching and entrepreneurship, whether you’re creating new programs, crafting marketing content, or solving client problems. In flow, you’re able to make new connections and think outside the box, which leads to breakthrough ideas.

2. Increases Efficiency: Flow allows you to get more done in less time because you’re fully immersed in the task at hand. Instead of wasting time on distractions or multitasking, flow helps you stay laser-focused on what matters most. This is especially important when you’re balancing multiple projects or working on a big launch.

3. Prevents Burnout: Burnout is a major challenge for coaches and entrepreneurs who are constantly pushing themselves to do more. Flow provides a sense of joy and fulfillment in your work, making it easier to stay motivated and avoid exhaustion. When you’re in flow, work feels more like play, and that helps you sustain your energy over the long term.

Let me share one of my favorite personal stories about flow and how it’s shaped my business. I live in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, one of the most exclusive ski resorts in the country. Skiing deep powder here is one of my favorite ways to get into flow. There’s something about the rhythm of skiing—the cold air, the feel of the snow under my skis—that puts me in a deep state of flow every time. When I’m skiing, I’m not thinking about work or anything else—I’m fully present, and that’s when some of my best ideas come to me.

One day, I was out skiing, completely immersed in the moment, when I had a major realization: the missing piece for many coaches wasn’t just more strategy—they needed accountability and personal support. I suddenly saw that creating a program that combined automated systems with high-touch accountability could help coaches grow their businesses while staying connected with their clients.

That’s how the idea for the Lifestyle Business Quest Personal Coaching Accountability Course was born. I realized that coaches needed more than just tactics—they needed a system to hold them accountable and ensure they were taking action. This idea, which came to me in a flow state, became the foundation for a course that has since generated millions of dollars in revenue and helped countless coaches scale their businesses.

Skiing isn’t the only place I access flow. Another key flow activity for me is meditating in my hot tub. There’s something about the combination of warm water, the quiet of the mountains, and the stillness of the early morning that brings me into a deep state of focus and clarity.

It was during one of these hot tub meditations that I fleshed out the details of the Personal Coaching Accountability Course. In that flow state, I was able to map out every part of the course—the structure, the systems, and how it would serve my clients. That mental clarity allowed me to create something that not only worked for me but also helped my clients achieve incredible results.

Flow has been a powerful tool in my business, and I’m excited to share how you can tap into it too.

Flow state isn’t just powerful for me—it’s been a game-changer for many of my clients. Here are a few stories that illustrate how tapping into flow led to major breakthroughs for them:

1. Sarah’s Yoga Flow: Sarah, a wellness coach, had been feeling stuck in her business. She wasn’t attracting her ideal clients, and her messaging felt scattered. She used to practice yoga daily but had stopped because she felt too busy. I encouraged her to get back into her yoga practice as a way to reconnect with her flow state. During one session, Sarah had a breakthrough: she realized she had been trying to serve too broad of an audience. Her true passion was helping busy female entrepreneurs find balance and wellness. After niching down, Sarah doubled her revenue and started working with her dream clients.

2. Melanie’s Meditation Flow: Melanie, a spiritual coach, had been trying to grow her business for years with little success. I suggested she return to her daily meditation practice to help her access flow. During one of her meditations, Melanie realized she was offering too many services that didn’t align with her deeper purpose. She simplified her business, focusing on one transformational program, and soon after, her business took off, and she started consistently booking high-ticket clients.

3. Margie’s Hiking Flow: Margie had been working long hours trying to do it all in her business. She loved hiking but hadn’t been on the trails in months. I encouraged her to get back out in nature and take time for herself. During one of her hikes, she realized that she needed to narrow her focus and serve a specific niche—female entrepreneurs. After making that shift, Margie’s business scaled quickly, and she was finally able to work fewer hours while earning more.

Now let’s talk about how you can tap into flow more consistently. Here are three actionable steps you can take to start accessing flow regularly and make it a key part of your daily routine:

1. Create a Distraction-Free Zone

Flow requires deep focus, so the first step is eliminating distractions. Whether it’s notifications on your phone, emails, or other interruptions, distractions pull you out of flow and keep you in a state of shallow work.

- Action 1: Schedule undisturbed work blocks. Set aside 60-90 minutes of focused work time. During this time, turn off all notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and create a physical environment that supports focus.

- Action 2: Use focus tools. Consider using techniques like the Pomodoro method (25 minutes of work followed by a short break) or apps like RescueTime to block distracting websites. This creates a structure that helps you stay focused and on task.

2. Work on Tasks that Challenge You (But Don’t Overwhelm You)

Flow happens when there’s a balance between challenge and skill. If a task is too easy, you’ll get bored. If it’s too hard, you’ll feel frustrated. The key is to work on tasks that are challenging enough to engage you without overwhelming you.

- Action 1: Break down big projects into manageable tasks. Take large projects and break them into smaller, achievable tasks that push you just enough to keep you engaged.

- Action 2: Set clear goals for each work session. Before you start working, define exactly what success looks like. For example, “I’ll create the outline for my new course today” is a clear, actionable goal that will help you stay focused and motivated.

3. Schedule Your Work During Peak Energy Hours

Everyone has natural peaks and valleys in their energy levels throughout the day. Flow is easier to access when you’re working during your peak energy hours—the times when you naturally feel most alert and focused.

- Action 1: Identify your peak energy hours. Spend a week tracking your energy levels to identify when you feel most focused and energized. Schedule your most important work during those times to increase your chances of entering flow.

- Action 2: Align your work with your energy rhythms. Use your peak hours for deep work like creating new programs, writing content, or working on strategy. Save routine tasks like answering emails for low-energy periods.

Bonus Tip: Engage in Flow Activities Outside of Work

Sometimes the best way to tap into flow at work is by first finding flow outside of work. Whether it’s skiing, hiking, yoga, or meditation, engaging in flow activities outside of your business helps reset your mind and makes it easier to access flow when you’re working.

Flow state isn’t just a productivity hack—it’s a game-changer for how you approach your business. By creating a distraction-free zone, working on tasks that challenge you, and scheduling your work during peak energy hours, you’ll be able to access flow regularly and operate at your highest level. Flow will help you unlock more creativity, improve your efficiency, and enjoy the work you do, all while growing your business to new heights.
