Welcome back to the Lifestyle Business Quest Podcast! I'm Travis Greenlee, your host and I’m so glad you’re here, and if this is your first time tuning in, you’ve joined at the perfect moment.
In today’s episode, we’re talking about willpower, self-mastery, and consistent action—the three key pillars to building a thriving coaching business. It’s easy to get distracted by new strategies or to think the secret to success is out there somewhere. But the truth is, the most important work you’ll ever do is on yourself—your ability to stay disciplined, make decisions aligned with your goals, and take consistent action.
You’ll walk away from this episode with a clear understanding of what willpower and self-mastery really mean, how they influence your business, and three powerful action steps to strengthen these traits starting today.
Plus, I’ll share how three of my clients—Paula, Jim, and Chantal—used these principles to go from stuck to thriving, scaling their coaching businesses in ways they didn’t think were possible.
Let’s start with willpower. Most of us think of willpower as the ability to push through challenges or resist temptations. But it’s so much more than that. Willpower is your internal mental muscle that helps you stay focused on long-term goals, even when there are easier, more immediate temptations in front of you.
The thing about willpower is that it’s finite—just like a physical muscle, it can get tired. Every decision you make, every time you resist distraction or stay disciplined, you’re using up some of your willpower. That’s why, by the end of the day, it can feel so much harder to resist checking social media, watching Netflix, or putting off that important task. But here’s the good news: willpower can be trained and strengthened just like any other muscle.
It’s crucial for coaches and entrepreneurs because running a business requires consistent discipline. Willpower is what helps you make those tough decisions day in and day out—whether it’s creating content when you don’t feel like it or staying focused on client work when distractions arise.
One of my clients, Paula, had a strong desire to grow her coaching business, but she constantly found herself falling off track. She’d start the week with enthusiasm, but by Wednesday or Thursday, her energy would dip, and she’d get sidetracked by distractions. Her willpower would wear thin, and important tasks would slip through the cracks.
Paula and I worked on building her willpower muscle through small, consistent actions. I didn’t ask her to overhaul her whole routine overnight. Instead, I challenged her to commit to completing just one high-priority task every single day—whether that was creating a piece of content, reaching out to a lead, or refining her offer.
This daily act of discipline started to strengthen her willpower. Over time, that single daily task turned into a routine, and Paula’s business started gaining momentum. By the end of three months, she wasn’t just more consistent—she was seeing double the client inquiries and had her first $10K month.
This is the power of willpower: it gives you the ability to stay on track, push through distractions, and build habits that lead to long-term success.
Now, let’s go even deeper with self-mastery. While willpower helps you push through immediate challenges, self-mastery is about the long-term control of your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It’s the ability to govern your internal world in a way that aligns with your higher goals and values.
Self-mastery is about being proactive rather than reactive. It’s knowing yourself so deeply that you can recognize your own triggers, manage your emotions, and maintain clarity under pressure. It’s what allows you to stay focused when everything around you feels chaotic.
When you’ve mastered yourself, you’re not controlled by circumstances, feelings, or distractions. You’re in charge of your own mind. And for coaches and entrepreneurs, self-mastery is a superpower because it allows you to stay focused on what truly matters in the long run, even when the day-to-day gets tough.
Jim, another client of mine, had big dreams for his coaching business, but he struggled with chasing every shiny new idea that came his way. He’d launch a program one week and then pivot to a completely different direction the next, always feeling like he wasn’t making enough progress. He had the motivation but lacked the self-mastery to stay focused and patient with his strategy.
We worked on helping Jim develop self-mastery by simplifying his business focus. I had him identify his core priorities—the most important actions that would move his business forward—and eliminate everything else that was causing distraction.
We also implemented mindfulness practices that helped Jim become more aware of his emotions and impulses. When he felt the urge to pivot or change direction, he learned to pause, reflect, and make decisions from a place of calm rather than frustration or impatience.
In just six months, Jim doubled his client base by sticking to a single strategy, refining it, and building deeper relationships with his clients. Self-mastery gave him the clarity and patience to stop chasing every new idea and focus on building sustainable, long-term growth.
Consistency is where willpower and self-mastery come together. Consistent action is the engine that drives success, no matter what your goals are. It’s not about doing everything perfectly, and it’s not about having bursts of productivity. It’s about showing up, day after day, and taking those small, meaningful steps that compound over time.
In business, consistency builds trust—with your audience, your clients, and yourself. It’s how you create momentum, even when progress feels slow. When you combine willpower, self-mastery, and consistent action, you create an unstoppable force that propels your business forward.
Another one of my clients, Chantal had the passion and drive for her coaching business, but she struggled with inconsistency. She’d go all-in one week—posting content, engaging with clients, and feeling energized—and then the next week, she’d fall off track. The result? Her business was stagnating because her actions were inconsistent.
We worked on building a simple, consistent plan for her. I asked Chantal to commit to showing up just three days a week with valuable content for her audience. At first, it was tough—life and distractions got in the way—but she used her willpower to follow through, even on days when she didn’t feel like it.
After a month, something shifted. Chantal began to build a habit of consistency, and her audience started to take notice. Engagement skyrocketed, and by the third month, she was consistently booking clients and hit her first six-figure year.
Consistency doesn’t just build momentum—it builds reliability. When you show up consistently, you create trust with your audience, and that’s where the magic happens.
Now that we’ve explored willpower, self-mastery, and consistency, I want to leave you with three practical steps you can take today to start strengthening your willpower and developing deeper self-mastery.
Step 1: Strengthen Willpower with “Micro-Wins”
To build your willpower muscle, start with micro-wins. These are small, manageable tasks that challenge you just enough to push your willpower without overwhelming you. The goal is to create a habit of following through, even on the smallest commitments.
Action: Choose one task—something small but important, like writing for 15 minutes or reaching out to one client—and commit to doing it every day for a week. Each time you complete that task, you’re exercising your willpower, and over time, it becomes easier to stay disciplined on bigger tasks.
Step 2: Develop Self-Mastery Through Mindfulness
One of the best ways to develop self-mastery is through mindfulness. Mindfulness allows you to become more aware of your thoughts, emotions, and impulses so that you can make intentional decisions instead of reactive ones. It helps you stay centered, even when things get chaotic.
Action: Set aside five minutes each day for a mindfulness practice. It could be as simple as focusing on your breath or reflecting on your thoughts. Over time, you’ll become more aware of the triggers that lead to distractions or impulsive decisions, and you’ll develop the self-mastery to stay in control.
Step 3: Set Boundaries to Conserve Willpower
Your willpower is a finite resource, and distractions drain it fast. To maintain focus, you need to set boundaries with distractions like social media, unnecessary meetings, or tasks that don’t align with your goals.
Action: Choose a block of time each day—whether it’s 30 minutes or two hours—where you eliminate all distractions. Turn off notifications, close unnecessary tabs, and focus solely on the task at hand. This trains your brain to concentrate, conserves your willpower, and helps you get into a state of deep work.
So, why are willpower, self-mastery, and consistent action so important for growing a coaching business?
- Willpower gives you the strength to overcome distractions and follow through on your daily tasks.
- Self-mastery allows you to manage your mind and emotions, keeping you aligned with your long-term goals.
- Consistent action is the key to turning small steps into big results over time.
Together, these elements create the foundation for a thriving, sustainable business.
