What if I told you that the real key to growing a thriving coaching business isnât the latest marketing strategy or sales technique? Itâs not about working harder or longer hours either. The secret lies in something much deeperâyour passion and purpose. Today, Iâm going to take you on a journey through how these two elements transformed my career, helped me serve over 5,000 coaches, and how they can be the game-changer for your business too. If youâve been feeling stuck, uninspired, or just not connected to your business, this episode is for you.
Hey everyone, and welcome to the Lifestyle Business Quest Podcast! Iâm so excited youâre here today because weâre diving into a topic that is near and dear to my heart: the power of passion and purpose in building a thriving coaching business. Whether youâre just starting out or youâve been at this for years, this episode is going to reignite that fire within you. Iâm Travis, and for the past 25 years, Iâve been coaching heart-centered entrepreneurs to build successful, $250K+ coaching businesses. What Iâve learned over those years is that passion and purpose arenât just nice-to-havesâtheyâre essential if you want to create a business that not only makes money but also makes a massive impact.
Letâs start by talking about why passion and purpose are so critical to your success. Passion is your fuelâitâs what gets you out of bed in the morning. Without it, even the most well-structured business will feel like a grind. Purpose, on the other hand, is your why. Itâs the reason you started this business in the first place. It gives you direction and keeps you focused when the road gets tough.
But hereâs the thingâa lot of coaches get lost in the hustle. They spend so much time working in their businessâmanaging clients, dealing with marketingâthat they lose touch with why they started in the first place. And when that happens, burnout isnât far behind.
Studies from the Harvard Business Review show that entrepreneurs driven by a strong sense of purpose are more engaged, more productive, and experience greater long-term success. Why? Because passion and purpose keep you going when things get tough. Theyâre your internal compass, guiding you through challenges and keeping you motivated even when results arenât immediate.
Now, let me take you back to why I do what I do. Over the last 25 years, Iâve had the incredible privilege of serving over 5,000 coachesâeach one with a unique story, a unique purpose. And hereâs what Iâve found: the coaches who thrive, the ones who build sustainable, impactful businesses, are the ones who stay connected to their passion and purpose.
For me, passion isnât just about building a businessâitâs about enhancing lives. From the very beginning, my purpose has been to help coaches unlock their potential and create businesses that allow them to live the lives theyâve always dreamed of. Every time I see a client succeedâwhether itâs reaching their first six figures or completely transforming their approach to businessâit reignites my passion. I feel blessed to do what I love, and thatâs what drives me every single day.
I remember one particular client, Sarah, who came to me feeling completely overwhelmed. She was juggling being a new mom and trying to grow her coaching business. She had passionâshe loved helping other moms reclaim their health and confidenceâbut she was struggling to balance it all. During one of our sessions, I asked her to dig deeper into why she started her business in the first place. Thatâs when it clicked for her. Her purpose wasnât just about fitness or healthâit was about giving women back their sense of identity, empowering them to feel strong and capable again.
When Sarah tapped into that purpose, everything shifted. We realigned her offerings so she could serve more clients through group programs instead of one-on-one, which not only gave her more time with her family but also increased her impact. Thatâs the power of passion and purposeâwhen you get clear on them, everything falls into place.
Letâs take this deeper with a few more real-life examples. Iâve seen this time and time again: when coaches reconnect with their passion and align their business with their purpose, their success skyrockets.
Margie came to me at a breaking point. She was working 18-hour days, saying yes to every client, and feeling drained. She had lost touch with the reason she became a coach in the first place. When we first sat down, I asked her, âWhy did you start coaching?â After some reflection, she realized her true passion was helping women regain their confidence and independence. But because she hadnât been clear on that, she was working with clients who didnât align with her vision.
Once we narrowed her focus and restructured her business to reflect her passion, everything changed. Margie went from burnout to a thriving business where she now works fewer hours but serves clients at a higher level. Her passion for empowering women became the driving force behind her success, and thatâs when her business truly took off.
Then thereâs Peter. Peter had been in the coaching industry for years but was struggling to connect with the clients he really wanted to serve. He was passionate about leadership and communication but found himself working with people who didnât light him up. After we dug deep into his âwhy,â Peter realized his purpose was to help leaders become more effective communicators, drawing from his own journey of overcoming public speaking fears.
We realigned his offerings to reflect this passion and started targeting executives who needed communication coaching. Within months, Peterâs business transformedâhe was booking clients who aligned with his vision, and his income tripled. His passion and purpose werenât just about making moneyâthey were about making an impact in the lives of leaders. Thatâs what fueled his success.
Now, letâs talk about what some of the worldâs most successful thought leaders have to say about passion and purpose.
Simon Sinek, in his book Start with Why, talks about how companies and individuals who lead with purpose create more loyal customers and more meaningful work. Sinekâs famous quote is, âPeople donât buy what you do; they buy why you do it.â This is so important in coaching because your clients arenât just hiring you for your servicesâtheyâre hiring you for the difference you can make in their lives. When your purpose is clear, it becomes magnetic. You attract the clients who resonate with your mission.
BrenĂŠ Brown, in her book Daring Greatly, emphasizes the power of vulnerability and authenticity, which are deeply tied to living and working with purpose. She talks about how stepping into your true purpose requires courage and the willingness to be seen. When we operate from a place of passion, we open ourselves up to deeper connections with our clients, and thatâs where the magic happens.
Angela Duckworth, the author of Grit, has done extensive research on how passion and perseverance are the keys to success. Duckworth argues that itâs not talent or intelligence that predicts long-term success, but the ability to stay deeply connected to a purpose over time. Grit is passion sustained by purpose, and thatâs what gets us through the inevitable challenges of running a business.
These experts underscore what Iâve seen in my own career and with my clients: Passion and purpose are *not* optionalâthey are the driving forces behind long-term, sustainable success.
So, how do you apply all of this to your own coaching business? Here are some practical steps you can take to reconnect with your passion and purpose today:
1. Reflect on Your âWhyâ
Take some time to think about why you started your coaching business. What is the impact you want to make? What change do you want to see in your clientsâ lives? Write it down. This will be your anchor when things get tough.
2. Align Your Offerings with Your Passion
Look at the services you currently offer. Do they align with what truly lights you up? If not, it might be time for a shift. Like Coach Sarah, maybe you need to move from one-on-one coaching to group programs to serve more people without sacrificing your time. Or maybe, like Peter, itâs about narrowing your niche so that youâre only working with clients who inspire you.
3. Tell Your Story Authentically
Your story is your most powerful marketing tool. Share it. Be open about why you do what you do. When youâre clear on your passion and purpose, and you communicate that to your audience, people will feel connected to you. They wonât just see you as a coachâtheyâll see you as someone who understands their struggles and can help them reach their goals.
4. Set Purpose-Driven Goals
Itâs easy to get caught up in setting financial goals, but donât forget the impact you want to make. How many lives do you want to change this year? What legacy do you want to leave? Purpose-driven goals give you a deeper reason to stay committed and push through challenges.
5. Reconnect with Your Passion Daily
Passion needs to be nurtured. Take time each day to reconnect with why you do this work. Whether itâs through journaling, reflecting on client wins, or reminding yourself of the bigger picture, staying connected to your passion will keep you energized and focused.
To wrap up todayâs episode, I want you to remember this: Passion and purpose are your greatest assets. They are the fuel that keeps you going when things get hard, and they are the magnet that attracts the clients you are meant to serve. When you lead with passion and align your business with purpose, success becomes inevitable.
