Today, we’re diving deep into why clarity of purpose is not only the foundation of your business but also the key to serving your clients at the highest level. We’re going beyond the surface to explore how having a clear purpose transforms not just your business, but your ability to truly change lives.

Welcome to the Lifestyle Business Quest Podcast! I'm Travis Greenlee your host and I’m excited you’re here because today, we’re talking about something incredibly powerful—the clarity of purpose. You might be wondering, why does this matter so much? Why is it so crucial to growing your coaching business and, more importantly, serving your clients at the highest level? Well, let me tell you from personal experience—it’s everything. When you’re clear on your purpose, you don’t just create a business. You create a movement, you attract the right clients, and you deliver value in ways you never thought possible.

In this episode, we’re going to dig into my journey of finding clarity of purpose, how it transformed my business, and why it’s the secret sauce to serving your clients powerfully. I’ll share personal stories, struggles, and breakthroughs that highlight why being clear on your why is the most important step in taking your coaching business—and your client impact—to the next level.

I want to take you back to a pivotal time in my life when my clarity of purpose was truly tested. It was 2008, the year of the great recession, and my business was hit hard. I went from having a waiting list of clients, a thriving seven-figure business, and a dream lifestyle that included daily skiing in Steamboat Springs, to almost losing it all overnight. Suddenly, the security, the freedom, and the sense of accomplishment I’d built felt like it was slipping away.

I remember those sleepless nights vividly. My wife, Teresa, and I would sit at the kitchen table, staring at an empty calendar, wondering how we were going to make it. We were scared, overwhelmed, and questioning everything. In those moments of doubt, I had to dig deep and reconnect with my purpose. I asked myself, “Why am I doing this? Why did I start coaching in the first place?”

The answer was crystal clear—I wanted to empower coaches to create freedom-based businesses so they could enjoy life on their terms, just like I had learned to do. But I realized that somewhere along the way, I had lost touch with that mission. I had gotten caught up in the hustle, in scaling, in the noise of what everyone else was doing, and I lost sight of why I started in the first place.

That moment of reconnection with my purpose was a turning point. It wasn’t just about making money or building a business anymore. It was about serving coaches who, like me, wanted to make a bigger impact while living a lifestyle they loved. This clarity reignited my passion and gave me the direction I needed to rebuild, not just with strategies and tactics, but with a renewed sense of why I was showing up every day. It wasn’t just business—it was deeply personal.

And it’s this clarity that transformed the way I serve my clients today. I’m not just teaching them marketing strategies or enrollment tactics—I’m helping them connect with their own purpose, align their business with their values, and create offers that reflect who they are at their core. This is what allows us to serve at our highest level—because when you’re clear on your why, you can’t help but pour everything you have into your clients. It’s not work; it’s a mission.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been seeing the ripple effect of clarity of purpose in my clients’ lives. When you’re clear on why you do what you do, it’s contagious. Your clients feel it. They see it in how you show up, in the authenticity of your message, and in the genuine care you bring to every interaction. This isn’t about delivering information—it’s about creating transformation.

I’ll never forget working with Coach Margie, who was struggling to find her footing in a crowded market. She had incredible skills, a deep passion for helping women reclaim their confidence, but she was stuck. Her business was scattered, her messaging was unclear, and she felt like she was constantly trying to chase clients instead of attracting them.

During one of our sessions, we did a deep dive into her purpose. I asked her, “Margie, what’s your why? Why did you start this business?” She paused, and then she told me a story about her own journey—how she had once been in a place of self-doubt, feeling small and invisible, and how finding her voice had changed everything for her. That was her purpose—to help other women experience that same transformation.

The moment Margie got clear on her purpose, everything shifted. She stopped trying to be everything to everyone and focused on the women she knew she could help most. Her marketing became magnetic because it was infused with her why. Her offers became irresistible because they were aligned with her mission. And the impact she started having on her clients was profound. Women were drawn to her authenticity, her passion, and her clear sense of purpose. Her business didn’t just grow—it exploded. And it all started with getting clear on her why.

This is why clarity of purpose is so crucial to serving at your highest level. When you know why you’re here, it changes how you show up. It infuses your coaching with passion and conviction that can’t be faked. Your clients feel seen, understood, and supported in a way that goes beyond the usual coach-client relationship. They feel connected to your mission, and that creates an unbreakable bond of trust and impact.

Clarity of purpose doesn’t just guide your coaching—it also drives every decision you make in your business. From the programs you create to the clients you take on, your purpose becomes the filter through which everything passes. This is what keeps you aligned and on track, even when the going gets tough.

For example, in my own business, I knew my purpose was to help coaches create freedom-based businesses. But to serve my clients at the highest level, I had to walk the talk. I had to design my business in a way that allowed me to live that freedom every day. That meant moving away from one-on-one coaching, which was limiting my impact and draining my time, and instead focusing on group coaching, courses, and scalable systems.

Making that shift wasn’t easy. It required me to let go of some old habits, to step outside my comfort zone, and to trust that my purpose would guide me. But the result was a business that not only served my clients better but also gave me the lifestyle I wanted—a lifestyle of freedom, adventure, and time with my family. And because I was living my purpose, I could bring my best self to my clients. I could coach from a place of authenticity and experience, knowing that what I was teaching wasn’t just theory—it was my lived reality.

This alignment between my purpose and my business model allowed me to show up for my clients in ways I never could have if I was stuck in the grind. It’s the same for my clients. When they align their offers, their marketing, and their client interactions with their purpose, they don’t just deliver services—they create transformational experiences that leave a lasting impact.

Let’s get into the real meat of this—how you can gain clarity of purpose and use it to elevate your coaching business and serve your clients at the highest level. Clarity doesn’t just happen by accident. It’s an intentional process that requires deep reflection, honesty, and sometimes a willingness to pivot. Here’s a step-by-step approach to gaining that crystal-clear purpose and aligning your business around it.

Step 1: Reflect on Your Why

This is where it all begins—your why. Your purpose is often deeply rooted in your personal experiences, your values, and your vision for the impact you want to make. To find it, start by asking yourself some foundational questions:

Why did I start my coaching business?

What lights me up when I work with clients?

What kind of transformation am I most passionate about facilitating?

Take some quiet time, journal about these questions, and dig into your personal story. Often, your why is connected to a pivotal moment in your life—a challenge you overcame, a lesson you learned, or a transformation you experienced. For me, my why became crystal clear after surviving cancer. I realized that life is a gift, and I wanted to spend mine empowering others to create businesses that gave them freedom and fulfillment.

One of my clients, Coach Christine, had a similar breakthrough. Christine had been spinning her wheels, feeling frustrated and unsure about her direction. During our coaching, she revisited the moment when she first felt the calling to help women improve their health and confidence. She had struggled with her own health for years, and it was through her journey of overcoming those challenges that she discovered her purpose. Once she reconnected with her why, it was like a light bulb went off. She stopped trying to fit into the mold of what she thought a coach should be and started embracing her unique story and voice. This clarity didn’t just change her business—it changed how she showed up in every aspect of her life.

Step 2: Define Your Ideal Client

Knowing who you’re here to serve is just as important as knowing why you’re doing it. Your purpose isn’t just about you—it’s about the people you’re meant to help. And the clearer you are about who those people are, the more impactful your work will be.

Start by creating a detailed profile of your ideal client. Think beyond basic demographics. Dive into their psychology—their fears, desires, pain points, and aspirations. What keeps them up at night? What do they dream of achieving? The more you understand your ideal client, the more you can tailor your messaging, offers, and coaching style to speak directly to them.

For example, Coach Peter came to me feeling overwhelmed. He was serving a broad audience of individuals and corporate clients, but it was wearing him thin. When we drilled down into his ideal client, he realized he was most passionate about helping mid-career professionals who were feeling stuck and wanting to pivot into more fulfilling work. By narrowing his focus, Peter not only attracted more of the right clients but was able to serve them more deeply because his programs were specifically designed to address their unique needs.

Remember, specificity is powerful. The clearer you are on who you serve, the easier it will be to attract those ideal clients who resonate with your purpose.

Step 3: Craft Your Personal Story

Your story is your most powerful marketing tool because it’s uniquely yours. It’s what sets you apart in a crowded market and creates a genuine connection with your audience. Crafting a compelling personal story isn’t just about sharing your successes—it’s about being vulnerable, honest, and real about your journey.

To craft your story, focus on three key elements:

1. The Struggle: Share the challenges you’ve faced that are relevant to your audience. People connect with struggle because it’s real and relatable.

2. The Turning Point: Highlight the moment of transformation—the pivotal decision, realization, or change that led you to where you are now.

3. The Victory and Ongoing Journey: Show your audience how you overcame your struggles and what you learned along the way. But also be honest that your journey is ongoing. This makes your story authentic and inspiring.

For me, my story of losing my business during the 2008 recession, battling back, and eventually creating the Lifestyle Business Quest is not just a tale of triumph—it’s a testament to the power of clarity and resilience. I share it because I want my clients to know that I’ve been where they are, and I’ve walked the path they’re on. And when you share your story, it gives your clients the hope and belief that they can overcome their struggles too.

Step 4: Align Your Offers and Business Model with Your Purpose

Once you have clarity on your why and who you serve, it’s time to align your business around it. This means evaluating your offers, your business model, and even your marketing strategies to ensure they reflect your purpose. Your offers should be a natural extension of your mission—designed to deliver the transformation you’re passionate about facilitating.

Ask yourself:

- Are my current programs aligned with my purpose?

- Do they address the needs and desires of my ideal clients?

- Is my business model sustainable and in alignment with the lifestyle I want to live?

When I transitioned my business from one-on-one coaching to group programs and courses, it was a direct result of aligning with my purpose. I realized I could serve more people, make a bigger impact, and create a business that supported my lifestyle. This shift wasn’t just about making more money—it was about fulfilling my mission in a way that felt authentic and sustainable.

Step 5: Infuse Your Messaging with Your Purpose

Your purpose should be the heartbeat of your marketing. Let it infuse everything you say and do—from your social media posts to your email newsletters, to your webinars and client calls. When your messaging reflects your why, it resonates deeply with the right people. It cuts through the noise and creates a powerful connection with your audience.

One of my clients, Coach David, found that once he started sharing his personal journey and speaking from his purpose, his audience engagement skyrocketed. He stopped trying to sound like everyone else and started showing up as his authentic self. And the results were immediate—his ideal clients began reaching out to him because they felt connected to his mission. That’s the power of purpose-driven messaging.

Clarity of purpose is the secret to serving your clients at the highest level. It’s the foundation that guides your decisions, fuels your passion, and connects you deeply with your audience. When you take the time to gain this clarity and align your business with your purpose, you don’t just create a business—you create a legacy. You become a coach who doesn’t just deliver results but changes lives.
