What if I told you that the key to success is simply staying in the game long enough to let things catch up? That’s what we’re talking about today—persistence. The magic ingredient most people overlook. It’s not about being the best or knowing everything; it’s about sticking with it when others would quit. So, if you’re feeling frustrated or stuck, trust me, this episode is for you.
Welcome back to The Lifestyle Business Quest Podcast! I'm Travis Greenlee, your host and I’m really excited about today’s episode because this is something that can literally change the trajectory of your business. We’re diving into persistence—what it really is, how it plays a critical role in growing a thriving coaching business, and why staying in the game is the best decision you can make.
I’m going to share stories from three of my clients—Katie, Peter, and Melanie—who were all ready to give up at different points in their journey. But they didn’t, and now, they’re experiencing the success they once thought was out of reach. Plus, I’ll give you three practical steps to help you stay persistent, even when things feel hard.
Sound good? Let’s jump right in!
Now, persistence gets thrown around a lot, right? But what does it actually mean? Let me tell you, persistence isn’t just grinding away without a break. It’s not about hustling harder than everyone else or pushing yourself to exhaustion. Persistence is about showing up—day after day, even when the results aren’t immediate. It’s about trusting the process, even when it feels like you’re not moving forward.
In my 25 years of coaching, if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: Success comes to those who stay in the game long enough to get there. And let me tell you, I’ve had moments where quitting seemed like the easiest option. Back in 2008, during the recession, my business was hit hard. I went from a full calendar of clients and financial freedom to a blank calendar, no revenue, and sleepless nights wondering if we’d lose everything.
But the thought of giving up didn’t sit right with me. I knew I had to stay in the game. So, I adapted. I learned new systems, built automation into my business, and slowly but surely, things turned around. That persistence paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined back then. And now, I get to help coaches like you build their dream businesses. But it all started with persistence—with refusing to quit.
Before we dive into the stories of my clients, let’s hear from some of the best authors on the subject of persistence because they really drive home the point that persistence is the ultimate game-changer.
Napoleon Hill, in Think and Grow Rich, talks about how persistence is the “sustained effort necessary to induce faith.” He says, *“Without persistence, you will be defeated even before you start. With persistence, you will win.”* It’s that simple—you only lose if you quit. Hill’s research on over 500 successful people showed that persistence is what separated those who made it from those who didn’t.
Then there’s Angela Duckworth, who wrote Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance. She says, “Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out—not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years.” In other words, it’s about staying the course, even when the excitement wears off and you’re in the trenches.
Seth Godin, in The Dip, reminds us that the dip—that tough period between starting something and mastering it—is what stops most people. He says, “The Dip is the long slog between starting and mastery. The extra effort that separates the average from the best in the world.” If you can push through those dips, you’re already ahead of 90% of the people who quit.
Lastly, one of my favorite authors Ryan Holiday, in The Obstacle Is the Way, teaches us that the obstacles we face are not roadblocks; they’re opportunities. He says, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” Your challenges aren’t stopping you—they’re shaping you. Persistence helps you transform obstacles into stepping stones.
Let me share with you how persistence played out in the real lives of some of my clients. These are people just like you, who were struggling, doubting, and ready to throw in the towel—but they stayed in the game, and the results were incredible.
Let’s talk about Katie. When Katie came to me, she was feeling completely overwhelmed. She was working long hours in her one-on-one coaching business, and while she was passionate about helping her clients, the work was burning her out. Even worse, her revenue was inconsistent, and she wasn’t seeing any way to scale without working even more. She was exhausted and ready to quit.
Now, here’s where persistence comes in. Katie didn’t quit. She was tired, frustrated, and on the verge of burnout, but she decided to give it one last shot. Together, we worked on simplifying her business—we streamlined her client acquisition process, built automation into her systems, and focused on high-ticket offers that didn’t require her to work 60-hour weeks. Katie kept showing up, even when the results didn’t come right away. And that’s the key. She stayed in the game.
After a few months, things started to shift. Katie’s business went from chaotic and exhausting to something she could manage with fewer hours, but here’s the kicker—her income jumped to $10,000 to $15,000 a month. Katie is now scaling her business while working less, and it’s all because she chose to persist when quitting would’ve been easier.
Now, let’s talk about Peter. Peter wasn’t new to coaching. He had been at it for a while and had seen some success, but he hit a plateau. No matter what he did—launching new programs, marketing his services, networking—his revenue was stuck. He was doing all the right things but wasn’t seeing growth. If you’ve ever felt like you were spinning your wheels without moving forward, you’ll relate to Peter’s story.
Peter was frustrated, and I remember him asking, “Travis, what else can I do? I’ve tried everything!” But here’s the thing—Peter didn’t give up. We adjusted his strategy, focused on refining his systems and simplifying his message, but most importantly, he persisted. He kept going, even when it felt like nothing was changing.
And you know what happened? Over time, the momentum started to build. His consistent efforts paid off, and today, Peter is bringing in $20,000 a month. He’s serving more clients than ever, and his business is thriving. Peter’s story shows that persistence isn’t about instant success—it’s about pushing through those plateaus and trusting that the results will come.
Finally, there’s Melanie. Melanie’s struggle wasn’t about a lack of effort—it was about self-doubt. For years, she dreamed of launching a coaching business but couldn’t find the confidence to put herself out there. She was constantly second-guessing herself, thinking, “Who am I to do this? What if I fail?” She had the passion, but she didn’t believe she had what it took to succeed.
When Melanie came to me, she was ready to quit before she even got started. But instead of walking away, she decided to stay in the game. We worked together to simplify her message, build her confidence, and create a scalable business model that wouldn’t burn her out. And let me tell you, it wasn’t an overnight transformation. Melanie had to push through a lot of fear and doubt, but she kept showing up. That’s persistence.
Fast forward to today—Melanie has launched her first high-ticket group program and has already landed several premium clients. She’s no longer held back by doubt, and her business is finally taking off. Her story is proof that persistence doesn’t just apply to external challenges; sometimes, it’s about sticking with your vision, even when your biggest obstacle is yourself.
Now, how can you build persistence in your coaching business? Here are three simple, practical steps you can start taking today:
1. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection. Persistence isn’t about getting everything perfect. It’s about making small, consistent progress. Every step forward counts. Don’t wait for the perfect moment or the perfect plan—just keep moving forward.
2. Reframe Obstacles as Opportunities. When you hit a roadblock, don’t see it as a reason to quit. Instead, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” Every challenge you face is an opportunity to grow stronger, smarter, and more resilient.
3. Build Accountability. Persistence is easier when you have people in your corner. Whether it’s a coach, a mentor, or a peer group, surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable and keep you motivated when things get tough.
So, there you have it—persistence is the key to building a thriving coaching business. It’s not about being perfect or having all the answers right away. It’s about staying in the game long enough to let things fall into place.
Katie, Peter, and Melanie all faced moments where quitting would have been the easier choice, but they didn’t. They persisted, and now they’re reaping the rewards. You can do the same. Your success might be just around the corner—you just have to stay the course.
