And in today’s episode, we’re diving deep into the role of faith—not just as a spiritual concept, but as a scientifically backed force that can drive you to success in your coaching business.
Hey everyone, welcome to the podcast. I'm Travis Greenlee, your host and Today’s episode is going to be a powerful one because we’re talking about faith—the deep, unwavering belief that you are going to make it, no matter how hard things get or how uncertain the path may be.
When we think about success in business, especially in the coaching world, we often focus on tactics, marketing strategies, and action plans. But here’s the reality: no amount of strategy will work if you don’t have faith in yourself, your vision, and the process. Faith is what keeps you in the game when everything else feels like it’s falling apart. It’s what gives you the strength to persist, to persevere, and to keep showing up, even when the results aren’t immediate.
Today, I’m going to share my own journey of overcoming cancer, and how faith became the driving force behind my recovery and my business success. I’ll also share the stories of clients like Jim, Chris, and Holly, who learned that faith was their greatest asset when facing challenges in their coaching businesses. We’ll also dive into some scientific research that shows how faith—both spiritual and personal—builds the mental toughness, resilience, and grit you need to thrive. By the end of this episode, you’ll walk away with three practical steps to cultivate more faith in your business and in yourself.
Let’s start with my story, because this is where I learned the true power of faith. When I was diagnosed with cancer, it felt like the ground had been pulled out from under me. I had always been someone who believed in working hard and staying positive, but nothing prepared me for the kind of uncertainty and fear that comes with facing your own mortality.
In those moments, it wasn’t strategy or planning that got me through—it was faith. Faith that I would heal, faith that I could rebuild my life, and faith that I would come out of this experience stronger than ever. Every day during treatment, I had to rely on that faith because there was no clear path. There were no guarantees. But faith gave me the strength to wake up each morning and keep fighting.
When I came through the other side, I realized something profound: if I could survive cancer, I could handle anything life threw at me. That faith became the foundation for how I approached my business. I didn’t know exactly how I would grow a multimillion-dollar coaching business, but I knew that if I stayed aligned with my purpose, trusted the process, and kept showing up, success would follow.
Faith also gave me the persistence to keep going when things got tough in my business. And they did. There were times when I faced setbacks, when I questioned whether I was on the right path. But the faith I had cultivated through my cancer journey kept me going. Like Napoleon Hill says in Think and Grow Rich, “Faith is the head chemist of the mind.” It transforms thoughts into action and gives you the courage to keep going even when fear tells you to stop.
Jim’s journey is one that a lot of you will relate to. Jim was stuck in a corporate job that felt safe but deeply unfulfilling. He had this vision of becoming a coach, helping people find their purpose and live with more meaning, but he was terrified of leaving the security of his job. The fear of the unknown was paralyzing him, keeping him from moving forward.
When Jim and I started working together, I told him something I had learned during my own journey: Faith isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about trusting that the next step will appear when you take action, even if the entire path isn’t clear.
Dr. Wayne Dyer’s teachings in The Power of Intention capture this perfectly. He says, “Faith is the complete reliance on the power of your higher self to get you to the place where you belong.” Jim didn’t need to have every step figured out—he needed to trust the process. And that’s exactly what he did.
Jim didn’t quit his corporate job overnight, but he began building his coaching business on the side, trusting that as long as he stayed connected to his vision and took aligned action, the path would reveal itself. Six months later, Jim was able to leave his job and go full-time in his coaching business. His faith allowed him to take the first step, and once he did, everything began to fall into place.
The lesson here? Faith isn’t about certainty. It’s about moving forward despite uncertainty. It’s about trusting that the right clients, the right opportunities, and the right moments will come when you stay committed and persistent.
Next, let’s talk about Chris, who faced a major setback in his coaching business. Chris had been running a successful coaching business for a few years when, seemingly out of nowhere, he lost several high-paying clients. His income took a nosedive, and he started to doubt whether coaching was really his calling. The fear of failure was overwhelming, and he felt like walking away.
Here’s the thing: setbacks are part of the journey. They don’t define your path—they’re just temporary challenges that test your faith. I reminded Chris of something that Napoleon Hill teaches in Think and Grow Rich. He says, “Faith is the eternal elixir that gives life, power, and action to the impulse of thought.” In other words, faith gives you the power to take action even when the results aren’t there yet.
Chris decided to lean into faith, trusting that the setback was temporary. He doubled down on his belief that the right clients would come and focused on refining his offers and services. Within a few months, Chris’s business bounced back, stronger than ever. He attracted clients who were even more aligned with his vision, and his income surpassed where it had been before.
Chris’s story teaches us that faith creates resilience. It allows you to keep showing up even when things don’t go as planned. It gives you the perseverance and grit to stay in the game long enough to see success.
Finally, there’s Holly, whose biggest challenge wasn’t external—it was internal. Holly had built a solid coaching business, but she constantly doubted herself. She didn’t feel “good enough” to raise her rates or to attract the high-level clients she wanted to work with. Her lack of faith in herself was holding her back from fully stepping into her potential.
We worked on shifting her mindset, and I shared with her one of my favorite teachings from Dr. Wayne Dyer: “You’ll see it when you believe it.” Holly didn’t need to wait for external validation. She needed to build faith in her own abilities, to trust that she was worthy of success and capable of achieving it.
Once Holly started building that internal faith, everything shifted. She raised her rates, attracted higher-paying clients, and began to step fully into her role as a confident coach. Her business grew, but more importantly, her belief in herself grew. Holly’s journey shows us that faith isn’t just about trusting the process—it’s about trusting yourself.
Now, let’s shift gears for a moment and talk about the science behind faith. You see, faith isn’t just a spiritual or emotional concept. It’s something that actually impacts the way your brain works, and it can be a driving force behind your persistence, resilience, and grit.
Studies in neuroscience show that when we have faith—whether it’s faith in ourselves, a higher power, or a process—we activate parts of the brain that are associated with goal-directed behavior. Faith stimulates the brain’s reward system, encouraging us to keep taking action even when the results aren’t immediate.
When you believe in a positive outcome, your brain releases dopamine, which not only makes you feel good but also motivates you to keep going. This is why people who have strong faith—whether it’s spiritual or personal—tend to be more persistent and resilient in the face of challenges.
Dr. Angela Duckworth, a leading researcher on grit, has shown that one of the key components of grit is optimism—which is really just another form of faith. Grit is the ability to persevere toward long-term goals, and it’s fueled by the belief that your efforts will eventually pay off. In other words, faith helps you stay in the game long enough to win.
Faith also builds mental toughness. When you face setbacks, faith helps you reframe those challenges as temporary obstacles rather than permanent failures. It helps you stay focused on the bigger picture, which gives you the strength to push through difficult times.
Let’s talk about how you can start building stronger faith in your business, yourself, and your vision. Here are three practical steps you can take right now:
1. Reconnect to Your Why. Your faith is rooted in your purpose. When you lose sight of your “why,” it’s easy to let fear and doubt take over. Take time every day to reconnect with your deeper purpose. Why did you start this journey? What’s the bigger vision behind your work? The more connected you are to your “why,” the stronger your faith becomes, because you know that your purpose is greater than any temporary setback.
2. Visualize and Embody Your Future Self. Faith isn’t just about hoping for a better future—it’s about becoming the person who lives that future right now. Start visualizing yourself as the person who already has the business, the clients, and the life you desire. How does that person think? What decisions do they make? Begin to embody that energy today, and your actions will naturally align with the results you want.
3. Practice Letting Go of the How. One of the hardest parts of faith is letting go of the need to control every step of the process. You don’t need to know exactly how things will unfold. Your job is to stay focused on your vision and take aligned action. The “how” will reveal itself as you go. Trust that the right opportunities, clients, and resources will come when you stay committed to your path.
Here’s the bottom line: Faith isn’t just a nice idea—it’s the foundation of everything you build. It’s what carries you through the tough times, gives you the grit to persevere, and keeps you aligned with your vision, even when the path ahead is unclear.
Whether you’re facing a personal challenge like I did with cancer, a business setback like Chris, or struggles with self-worth like Holly, faith is what will keep you moving forward. It’s the belief that your vision is unfolding perfectly, even when you can’t see the whole picture.
