What if the secret to creating the business of your dreams wasn’t in working harder or finding the next big strategy, but in who you become along the way? Imagine if your success wasn’t just about doing more, but about growing into the person who can hold and sustain that success. Today, we’re going deep into the concept of Arete—an ancient philosophy about the pursuit of excellence in every part of your life. Through this lens, you’ll see how it’s not the hustle that gets you where you want to go—it’s the inner work. You’re about to see why focusing on who you become is the key to manifesting a thriving business.

Welcome to the Lifestyle Business Quest Podcast! I’m so excited about today’s episode because we’re tackling something deep—Arete, the idea of pursuing excellence in everything we do. But here’s the twist: We’re not talking about perfection or checking off boxes. No, Arete is about who you become in the process of building a successful business.

If you’re here listening, I know you’ve already been putting in the work. You’ve tried the strategies, you’ve implemented the tactics, but maybe there’s something missing. Maybe, despite all your efforts, you still feel stuck. And let me tell you something powerful: The business of your dreams isn’t just waiting for you to do more—it’s waiting for you to become more. Today, we’re going to dive deep into how embracing Arete can help you grow into the kind of person who naturally manifests success. Stick around, because I’ll also be sharing some real-life stories from my clients Maggie, Michelle, and Mary, who made this shift and saw their businesses transform.

Let’s start with the basics. What is Arete? In ancient Greece, Arete was more than just a word for “excellence.” It was a philosophy, a way of life. It was about striving to reach your highest potential—not just in one area, but in every part of your life. Arete isn’t about perfection or an unreachable goal—it’s about constantly asking, How can I show up as the best version of myself today?

Here’s why this matters for your business. If you’re not focused on growing into the person who can handle the success you want, it’s like trying to fill a bucket with holes in it. No matter how much you pour in—no matter how many strategies you implement—something will always be leaking. You’ve got to become the person who can sustain the business of your dreams.

One of the most insightful modern interpretations of this idea comes from Ryan Holiday in his book The Obstacle Is the Way. He talks about how challenges aren’t just barriers in our path; they are the path. The obstacles you face in your business—the struggles with scaling, the difficulty in attracting clients, the burnout from overworking—aren’t signs that you’re failing. They’re invitations to grow into the kind of person who can overcome them. It’s not about pushing through the challenges; it’s about letting those challenges shape you into someone stronger, more resilient, and more aligned with your purpose.

Brian Johnston, another thought leader on Arete, emphasizes that it’s a journey—an ongoing commitment to growth. You’re never “done” pursuing excellence because excellence itself evolves as you evolve. In business, that means your growth is constant. Every new client, every new goal, every setback is an opportunity for you to become better, stronger, and more capable.

This brings me to Maggie’s story. Maggie was in a place that I’m sure many of you can relate to—completely overwhelmed. She was juggling so many things in her business: client work, marketing, content creation, sales, you name it. And despite all of this hard work, she felt like she was barely keeping her head above water. She had clients, yes, but her business wasn’t growing the way she wanted, and she couldn’t figure out why.

The turning point for Maggie was when we introduced the idea of Arete into her business. I asked her, “What would it look like if you pursued excellence, not just in how you run your business, but in how you take care of yourself, how you approach your work, and how you show up for your clients?” It wasn’t about doing more; it was about becoming more. Once she shifted her mindset from hustle to intention, everything changed. She became more focused, more present, and more aligned with her vision. And within six months, Maggie’s income had doubled—not because she was working harder, but because she had grown into the person who could handle that success.

Here’s the reality: You can hustle all day long, but if you’re not growing into the person who can hold success, you’ll always be chasing it. The key is to stop thinking of success as something you need to grab, and start seeing it as something you naturally attract by becoming the person who’s ready for it.

Think about it: The version of you who’s struggling to get clients, feeling overwhelmed, or burning out is different from the version of you who runs a six-figure business with ease. The difference isn’t just in the strategies you use—it’s in who you are. You can’t out-hustle personal growth. That’s where Arete comes in. It’s about constantly evolving, showing up as the best version of yourself, and allowing that inner transformation to guide your outer success.

This shift was exactly what Michelle needed. Michelle had a successful coaching practice, but she had hit a ceiling. She wanted to grow, but the idea of taking on more clients was terrifying because she thought it would mean more work, more stress, and less personal connection with her clients. She was caught in a loop—afraid that scaling her business would cost her the quality and integrity she cared so much about.

Here’s where Arete came into play. Instead of focusing on how Michelle could simply do more, we shifted the focus to who she needed to become in order to run a bigger business with the same level of personal care and attention. We worked on her mindset, on growing into the version of herself who could trust systems, delegate tasks, and still maintain deep, meaningful relationships with her clients.

Michelle embraced this idea of excellence—not just in her work, but in how she led her business. We developed a hybrid coaching model for her, blending automation with live coaching to allow her to scale without losing her personal touch. And guess what? Within months, Michelle’s business grew by 150%, but more importantly, she felt aligned. She wasn’t hustling more—she had become the kind of leader who could handle a thriving business. That’s what Arete does—it helps you grow into the person who’s ready for more success, without burning out or losing yourself in the process.

I want to tell you about Mary because her story is such a powerful reminder that personal growth directly impacts your business growth. Mary had been coaching for years, but she was stuck in a cycle of undercharging and overdelivering. She loved helping her clients, but her business was barely scraping by, and she was burning out. She was exhausted, frustrated, and ready to give up.

Here’s the thing: Mary’s issue wasn’t about her skills as a coach or even about her pricing. Her real struggle was that she hadn’t yet grown into the version of herself who believed she was worth charging premium rates. She hadn’t stepped into her own excellence. She was stuck playing small, not because she didn’t have the skills or the knowledge, but because she didn’t see herself as the kind of coach who could command higher prices and deliver next-level transformations.

We worked on shifting Mary’s mindset. I asked her to visualize what it would look like if she fully owned her value. I asked her, “What would it look like if you stepped into the version of yourself who knows she’s worth every penny of a high-ticket program? How would you show up differently? How would you handle your clients? How would you feel?”

That mindset shift was the breakthrough Mary needed. She started seeing herself as a coach who deserved to charge premium rates. She launched a high-ticket coaching program, and within a few months, she had gone from barely getting by to consistently signing high-ticket clients. But more than the financial transformation, Mary had grown into a more confident, empowered version of herself. She had become the kind of coach who could handle a thriving business, and her clients felt that shift, too. They started getting better results because Mary was showing up as her best self—aligned, confident, and fully in her power.

This is why I say that personal growth is the foundation for business growth. If you’re stuck in a scarcity mindset or if you’re playing small, your business will reflect that. But when you commit to Arete, when you commit to constantly evolving and stepping into your excellence, your business will rise to meet you.

So how do you start applying Arete in your own business and life? How do you begin to become the person who can manifest the success you want?

The first step is to get crystal clear on who you need to become to reach your next level of success. Visualize it. What does your day look like when you’re running a thriving, six-figure business? How do you spend your time? How do you show up for your clients? The more clearly you can see this future version of yourself, the easier it will be to start embodying that person right now. Success doesn’t just happen—it’s something you grow into.

Embrace Challenges as Opportunities for Growth. This is huge. The challenges you face in your business aren’t just obstacles—they’re opportunities for you to grow into the person who can handle even greater success. The next time you hit a roadblock, instead of getting frustrated, ask yourself, “What is this challenge teaching me? How is this helping me become better, stronger, more resilient?” When you see challenges as stepping stones, you stop feeling stuck and start seeing them as invitations to grow.

Arete isn’t just something you apply to your work—it’s a mindset you bring to every area of your life. Start building habits that reflect excellence. Whether it’s creating a strong morning routine, committing to personal development, or simply being more intentional with your time, these habits compound over time. Excellence in your personal life will lead to excellence in your business.

Arete' is a lifelong journey. You’ll never stop growing, and that’s the beauty of it. Make a commitment to continuous learning and personal development. Read books like The Obstacle Is The Way, hire a coach, enroll in the Lifestyle Business Quest, seek out mentorship—whatever it takes to keep growing. The more you grow, the more your business will grow alongside you.

Now, I want you to take a moment and reflect: Where can you start applying Arete in your life or business today? Is it in how you show up for your clients? In how you handle challenges? Maybe it’s in the way you manage your time. Write it down, and make a commitment to grow into the person who can manifest the business you want. And I’d love to hear from you!
